How to Create a Stress-Free-Ish Morning Routine with a Toddler

Hey there, fellow moms! If you're anything like me—a mama navigating the chaos of toddlerhood while pregnant (or not pregnant)—you know that mornings can sometimes feel like a full-on battle. And I know that sometimes, no matter what you do, the battle doesn’t stop. BUT, with a bit of planning and a LOT of grace, we can create a stress-free-ish morning routine that sets a positive tone for the day.

Here’s how I do it:

Wake Up Before Your Toddler

I know, I know—getting up early when you're already exhausted sounds like a cruel joke. But trust me on this one. Even 15-30 minutes of quiet time before your toddler wakes up can be a game-changer. Use this precious time to sip some coffee (or tea, in my case), read a book, or just revel in the glorious silence. You'll be fully awake and ready to tackle the day when your little tornado wakes up.

Prepare Breakfast the Night Before

Mornings can be chaotic enough without the added stress of figuring out breakfast. Save yourself some sanity by prepping breakfast the night before. Overnight oats, pre-cut fruit, or even scrambled eggs are lifesavers. And yes, I know many people don’t love the idea of reheating eggs, but my girl loves them and making them from scratch daily sometimes feels like an absolute MOUNTAIN to climb. With breakfast ready to go, you can focus on more important things—like finding your toddler's other shoe or pulling the toys out from under the couch (AGAIN).

Lay Out Clothes the Night Before

Want to avoid the morning fashion drama? Lay out your AND your toddler’s clothes the night before. Better yet, let them choose between a couple of outfits (and when I say a couple, I mean 2. Because let’s be honest, too many choices suddenly become more work than finding an outfit daily.) This not only saves time but also gives your little one a sense of independence. Plus, it’s one less thing to argue about in the morning, and who doesn’t love that?

As for you, just save yourself one more decision to make in the morning and have your clothes ready to go.

Morning Activities to Keep Your Toddler Engaged

Keeping your toddler entertained while you get ready is key. Set up a small play area with their favorite toys, books, or puzzles. Activities that don’t require constant supervision are your best bet. This way, you can finish getting ready without your toddler deciding that the toilet is their new swimming pool.

I lucked out with a girl who does like to play independently, as long as I’m quite and she forgets I’m there for 20 minutes (so, wear headphones when you watch the next season of Too Hot To Handle on your iPad, okay?)

Incorporate Your Self-Care Routine

Yes, self-care is still a thing—even for us busy moms. And I’ll be honest, I am the WORST at sticking to a self-care routine. Incorporate small self-care rituals into your morning routine to keep your sanity intact. Whether it’s a quick skincare routine, a few minutes of stretching, or enjoying a quiet cup of tea, make sure to prioritize yourself.

Remember, a happy mom equals a happy family. Bonus points for stretching if you’re pregnant!

Tips for Staying Flexible and Adapting to Changes

Let’s be real—toddlers are unpredictable little beings, and some days won’t go as planned. It’s important to stay flexible and go with the flow. If something isn’t working, switch it up and try a different approach. The goal is to create a stress-free morning, so don’t sweat it if things don’t go perfectly. Especially with young toddlers who can’t communicate well, this morning routine is about 50/50 until their talking becomes a bit better.

Creating a stress-free morning routine with a toddler is totally doable with a bit of planning and a lot of flexibility. By waking up early, prepping in advance, and making time for yourself, you can start your day on a positive note. Here’s to more peaceful mornings and fewer toddler tantrums!

And ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS give yourself grace, you’re doing amazing!
